1980 brought a special honour to Panufnik – he was asked to compose a short piece for brass ensemble, dedicated to the Queen Mother on her eightieth birthday. He wrote a brief, barely three-minute-long piece called Paean (the duration was specified by the organisers), which is a kind of ceremonial fanfare. It was premiered during a special concert at the Royal Albert Hall in London on 16 November 1980 by players from the Royal Military School of Music, Kneller Hall, wearing their dress uniforms.
